Warm damp air gets pulled in through the vents from about May onward, condenses on the cool framing under the floor, and the smell rides the air upward into the house. I put plastic down under our house myself a few years back. Why hasn't it helped?
Loose plastic laid over the dirt slows evaporation in the middle of the space and does nothing at the walls, the piers or the seams. Air still moves freely through the open vents, so the humidity level under the floor barely changes.
