At this elevation it can be. Shallow footings in thin plateau soil feel freeze and thaw cycling, which lifts and drops the foundation seasonally. If the crack has been getting a little wider each winter and never quite closes up again, the movement is accumulating and worth measuring.
Our footings look shallow to me. Is there anything that can be done about that?
