Slope is the other factor. A house partway up a ridge flank has water moving through the ground toward it from above, and saturated soil under a footing carries less weight. That is exactly what the survey answers. A lot of the wartime housing has picked up some movement over eighty years, and a measured set of elevations tells you where yours sits compared with a level floor. Without numbers, everyone is comparing feelings.
Our house is partway up the ridge and the low side is the cracked side. Why the low side?
Because water travelling through the soil from above arrives there and saturated ground carries less weight, and because the low side of a graded lot is often the filled side. Both push in the same direction, which is why that end is usually the one that moves.
Is the original foundation on these houses deep enough to pier?
Piers are installed to pick up load regardless of how shallow the original footing is, which is much of the point. They go down past the weather-affected material to competent strata. The assessment covers what your particular foundation allows.
How much disruption would this cause to a house we're living in?
Less than people expect. Pier work happens at the footings and load is transferred slowly, so the house stays usable throughout. We tell you in advance about access, and larger repairs take longer than the one to three days a crawlspace project runs.
